Passion for fashion drives Olympic Heights valedictorian - Palm Beach Post

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR: Alexandra Zofcin, 18

For this valedictorian, fashion is her life.

Alexandra Zofcin – or Aly – earned a 4.0 grade point average and took 10 Advanced Placement classes, but her fascination is with clothing.

She’s been sewing her own garments for the past four years, and in March she helped bring the first-ever student-run fashion show to the Olympic Heights High School auditorium. The event honored the retirement of Olympic Heights’ fashion teacher, Ann Granzow.

Parents and fashion followers lined up before the doors opened and nearly filled the auditorium the evening of March 13, shouting in support as each model sauntered down the runway. Zofcin’s dream, which featured models wearing a plethora of her designs, became a reality.

“Fashion has become my whole world,” said the 18-year-old. “Fashion comes easily to me, and I know I fit.”

Designing clothes, however, is not the only thing Zofcin slid into successfully in high school.

She was president of National Honor Society, president of St. Baldrick’s Club, an Art Club member and Editor-in-Chief of the Torch, the student newspaper. She was also a first-place winner at the Palm Beach Post Pathfinder awards.

This fall, she will attend Lynn University in Boca Raton to study fashion merchandising. Zofcin also likes Lynn because of its strong international presence, and plans to study abroad to soak in designs from all over the world.

Her Draping project was displayed at a Lynn University Fashion Show, and her long-term goal is to own a fashion house in New York City. She’s already met some of the major designers and gotten advice from them (her experience as a newspaper reporter helped her ask the right questions no doubt).

The only child of MarieAngela and Phil, Zofcin spent last summer working at Sew Much Fun, teaching little kids how to sew.

As for the valedictorian’s passion, she says fashion is as stimulating as the other fields of study she mastered in high school. In fact, she said that many people take for granted the importance of fashion in the world, and that subjects like history and language play a pivotal role in many fashion elements.

“I decided I would prove everyone wrong about the stereotypes of valedictorian,” Zofcin said. “You don’t have to be a science or math major to be smart and successful. You can be interested in other things and still be successful – like art and fashion.”
