Nancy Joy Henrick stood out in a crowd — she was 6 feet tall and a striking beauty. The fashion coordinator for the old Famous-Barr department stores spotted her in a play and put her to work modeling at the downtown store’s popular Tea Room restaurant.
Before long, she also was working for rivals Stix, Baer & Fuller; Scruggs, Vandervoort & Barney; and Saks Fifth Avenue, and at the annual Globe-Democrat fashion show.
She was a familiar face in ads for Famous-Barr and became a well-known model here from the mid-1950s through the 1970s.
“Not only was she strikingly beautiful … she wore clothes well, so well that her outfits almost always sold to her adoring public,” said her son, Richard Henrick of Wildwood, a screenwriter and author of “Crimson Tide.”
Mrs. Henrick graced the Muny stage alongside comedian Bob Hope in the musical “Roberta.”
She modeled Elizabeth Taylor’s golden funeral gown for “Cleopatra” in the movie’s traveling show promotion.
She was the daughter of Max and Rose Jackman, who owned Jackman’s Fabrics here. She graduated from Clayton High School and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia.
During World War II, she was invited to a USO dance at Heman Park in University City. The hostess, a Red Cross chapter president, was recruiting tall women to dance with the soldiers.
That’s how she met Harold Henrick of Brooklyn, N.Y., a dental student at Washington University. They married in 1944.
In addition to his dental practice, he was an artist. He got some of the paintings for his collection in exchange for working on artists with bad teeth.
The couple’s four-bedroom residence in Creve Coeur was called a “home of the future” in a 1988 feature in the Post-Dispatch.
Nancy Joy Henrick died March 23, 2015, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield. She was 90 and had been treated for complications of multiple myeloma, her family said Friday.
She was buried at New Mount Sinai Cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to her son, include her daughter, Marti Jacquemin of Des Peres. Her husband died in 2006.
