CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The last year has come and gone in a flurry. I took a timeout during the holidays to look back on all of the wonderful Clevelanders who were brave enough to face my audio recorder, my camera and my colleague Jon Fobes' video camera to be featured in the Fashion Flash.
The word that comes to mind when I look at the group from 2014 is "inspiration."
We ran the gamut from young adults just starting out, to several wonderful people who are just starting over. From job loss, new career paths, divorce, disease, diet -- you name it, we had wonderful stories of inspiration.
We saw our fashionistas wear thrift and vintage, street style, high-end designers, homemade, hand-me-downs and artist-made articles. We saw everything from super casual to modern business attire to stunning formal wear. We saw timeless classics, family heirlooms and wild statement pieces. We saw the funky, the flamboyant and the fabulous.
We talked about trends in beauty and fashion and how much we love Cleveland. We talked about food, sports and travel. We talked about workouts, live music, aging and creativity. We didn't just cover fashion, we covered life.
I love seeing how people interpret their sense of style and bring it to life through the fashions they choose to wear. We are a melting pot of personalities and now is the time to show it.
According to everyone else, Cleveland is newly cool (we already knew that) and the diversity of our styles and fashion choices is what helps us stand out.
Young and old, we are finding what works best for us. We own our bodies and our budgets as we stand tall, lose the cookie-cutter, same-old, same-old image and make what works for us work for us.
When I ask, "What is your best fashion advice?" so many people have said similar things: "Don't worry about your size." "Wear what fits and makes you feel confident." "Stop worrying about what people think of you, it doesn't matter."
I wish I knew all of that when I was in my 20s and 30s.
I realized a few years ago that this column was about more than fashion. It was more than "Where do you like to shop?" and "Who is your favorite designer?" When people started to confide in me and to let me tell their stories, we all realized that fashion and style were a vehicle to something deeper.
I am inspired by the thought and devotion that this group put into enjoying life through their unique styles and their fashion choices.
As for me, I have some fashion resolutions for 2015. I'm inspired to wear heels with jeans, spend more time in the gym, shop more vintage and thrift, save money on some things and spend money on wardrobe essentials. I'm inspired to clean out my closet, get organized and give away everything that I don't wear so that someone else can enjoy it.
It's an exciting time to just be you and the fashionistas of the Fashion Flash prove it week after week. My thanks go out to all of them. They've inspired us to be confident, no matter what.
