Feathered fashion is taking wing for fall - OCRegister

One of the easiest ways to take an outfit from day into evening through the holiday season is to incorporate one feathered item. When feathers – faux or rooster, ostrich and turkey – accent a vest, line the hem of a dress, or cover an entire short skirt, they make a basic piece flirty, tactile, festive, irreverent and let’s face it, more fun.

It’s been a big year for plumage in fashion. The feathers in Angelina Jolie’s costumes in the film “Maleficent” last spring helped illustrate the story of identity, power and freedom and inspired mass-market clothes with feather prints.

Around the same time, visual presentation and design students at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York mounted “Fowl Play,” an exhibition featuring mannequins dressed up with feathered garments that represented birds such as a snow owl and flamingo.

Several weeks ago, “Birds of Paradise: Plumes & Feathers in Fashion,” an exhibition of feathers through various periods of fashion history moved to its second stop – at the Bowes Museum in the town of Barnard Castle, County Durham in England – after concluding its run at the Mode Museum in Antwerp, Belgium. The showcase includes the seminal works of Ann Demeulemeester, Thierry Mugler, Prada and the late Alexander McQueen and Yves Saint Laurent.

For the holiday season, many designer names at the upper strata, such as Lanvin, Alberta Ferretti, Prabal Gurung and Marni are offering feather-festooned jackets, dresses and skirts in bold hues such as red and yellow. But what has trickled down to more affordable levels tends to be the always versatile black, which is sometimes combined with white or red.

Here, three top Orange County stylists sound off on their must-have feathered items and how to wear them:

Leslie Christen, lesliechristenblog.com: Lanvin feathered-covered skirt at Lanvin, South Coast Plaza. “Make it casual with Converse and a tee or dress it up for a cocktail party paired with ankle strap heels, a silk camisole and cropped blazer or moto jacket. Feathers are frivolous and fun! I suggest keeping it on the mini side and not too voluminous. It can pose a volume-inducing look but with the right proportion, it can actually look fantastic on many body types. If you're not too secure with a bare leg in a micro-mini then pair the feathered skirt with some black opaque tights.”

Lori Gladstone, gladstonelc.com: Salvatore Ferragamo ostrich-feather clutch at Salvatore Ferragamo, South Coast Plaza. “This handbag is the perfect accessory to add a bit of whimsy and flair to any outfit. I prefer to see it as part of the look versus the dominant look. This versatile bag can work with a variety of solid color dresses for the holidays. It can also be worn very easily with denim, brown riding boots, a camel turtleneck sweater and a blazer. It adds just enough glamour to any basic look without overpowering. Instead of draping yourself in feathers, simply adding in one statement item can instantly update your look. Feather details are an easier and less daunting way to wear this trend that can tend to look borderline costume-like if not done properly. Dress down the rest of your look. Try a simple black dress, black shoes and the bag or simple denim and no accessories except for the bag. It's a perfect statement in just the right dose.”

Katie O’Sullivan, styledbykatie.com: Alice + Olivia two-tone black and burgundy flared miniskirt at bloomingdales.com. “If you’re going to play along in the trend, why not go bold. Mini skirts are huge this fall and feathers are just fun. I would style it just as I would my boyfriend jeans – just as casual. Pair it with a plain white tee, pointy toe booties, a jacket draped over the shoulders, a bucket bag & a bold lip. You want the skirt to be the focal point. Another look I love is the mini skirt with a chunky pull over sweater. Open toe booties, a wide brim hat & an oversized metallic clutch are the perfect finishing touches.
