What Is Pre-Fall Anyway? - Wall Street Journal

A LOGICAL PERSON might refer to the season that precedes autumn as "summer." Then again, fashion and logic don't always intersect. And so the new clothes that have been arriving in stores for the past few weeks go by the technically correct, if odd-sounding name of "pre-fall."

Though summer's temperatures are only climbing, the emphasis with pre-fall clothes is often heavy on the "fall," and less so on the "pre." For instance, should you be inclined, you can already sort through piles of excellent, toasty coats, from Joseph Altuzarra, Michael Kors and the Row. But the season also presents an opportunity to snap up some excellent clothes less beholden to trends than true "fall" looks—including lighter pieces that can be worn immediately and are largely untouched by the fashion press's overexposing glare. Here a shopping strategy for what to buy now and when to wear it.

NOW | Look for pre-fall separates—cropped trousers, tops, all manner of skirts. These can always be lightened up by whatever you choose to pair them with.

Narciso Rodriguez Top, $1,295, net-a-porter.com; Plongé Leather Culottes, $2,450, Proenza Schouler, 212-420-7300; Marni Sandals, $490, net-a-porter.com

SOON | Layerability is crucial here. For instance, a chiffon dress is light enough for an Indian Summer day and warms up easily for a chillier night with a long cardi.

Equipment Sullivan Cardigan, $320, net-a-porter.com; Chloé Grain de Riz Wavy Dress, $3,575, neimanmarcus.com; Aquazzura Booties, $695, Boyds Philadelphia, 215-564-9000

LATER | If you know you're in the market for a new coat, look for one now to wear down the road. Ditto: trousers, dressses and skirts in heavier fabrics.

Jumpsuit, $5,200, Valentino, 212-772-6969; Wool Melton Sleeveless Chesterfield, $2,250, Michael Kors, 212-452-4685; Gianvito Rossi Mattie Boots, $1,785, Bergdorf Goodman, 888-774-2424
