Mount Airy Downtown has set Aug. 2 as the date for its fall fashion show, “Rock the Runway.”
The show’s dual purpose is reducing child hunger in Surry County and showing shoppers items they think they have to go elsewhere for are right here. According to Downtown Coordinator Lizzie Morrison, the show will begin at 1 p.m. at Old North State Winery. The fashion show is free to the public but organizers are providing donation boxes for foodstuffs.
Non-perishable items for donation include Spaghetti-O’s with a pop top lid, peanut butter crackers, soup with a pop top lid, Toaster pastries, fruit gummies and or roll-ups, instant oatmeal, single serve applesauce, canned meats such as tuna or chicken, Ramen-style noodles, single serve fruit cups, pudding cups, cereal bars, single serve vegetable cups, instant potatoes, beef stew, instant grits, snack cakes, single serve cereal boxes, easy macaroni and cheese, Beanie Weenies with a pop top lid, pasta and rice dinners, granola bars and any individual servings of snacks such as trail mix, pretzels, chips and cookies.
“This is my third year being involved with the show and it is just a fun event,” said Morrison. “Earlier we had only done a spring fashion show but we decided to do a fall one. Participants will see a lot of back to school fashion with jewelry, accessories and handbags.”
She explained the typically high energy events featuring local citizens as non professional models have become a great way for shoppers to see many of the things offered by local merchants.
“There are a lot of people who feel if they need something they have to go to Winston-Salem,” Morrison said. “There is a wide array of items from all price ranges here. They can shop locally and put money back into their community.” She said goodie bags featuring gifts from local merchants will be given to the first 50 participants to the show. Bear Creek Gifts is providing the gift bags themselves for the fashion show.
“You could make an entire day of this downtown,” said Morrison. “You could have a meal downtown before the show, take notes on what you see you like and go get what you like. We’re proud to provide fashion with compassion through this show. It’s important to shop local but more importantly to put food in the bellies of local children.” She said all food collected goes to benefit the White Plain’s Elementary School Children’s backpack program.
