Move Over Cosplay: Comic-Con's Very First “Geek Couture” Fashion Show Is ... - MTV.com

Fangirl apparel company Her Universe has teamed up with teenage outpost Hot Topic and Nerdist Industries to present Comic-Con’s first ever fashion show “Geek Couture.” The Her Universe Fashion Show will feature 36 different looks created by 36 designers. What’s special about this is that the two winning designers (one of which is chosen by a panel of judges, the other by the audience), will co-design an exclusive collection with Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein for Hot Topic!

Her Universe also provided a variety of suggestions (provided below) for potential looks. There seems to be an emphasis on actual wearable fashion instead of cosplay, which is what you’d normally find at a con, which is refreshing especially since “Geek Fashion” usually tends to fall into either cosplay or … t-shirts. Not only is presenting more wardrobe options extremely savvy, so is the push towards actively courting female fans.

Fan favorite Loki makes an appearance in a smart overcoat, with gold and green embroidery. His signature horns make an appearance as a fun little hat that wouldn’t seem out on Princess Beatrice‘s head. Is it just me or are Loki’s shoes giving major “Maleficent” vibes? Meanwhile Doctor Who’s Tardis is transformed into a lovely cobalt blue coat dress.

Hold the phone, this Grecian Captain Kirk dress is so so wearable and doesn’t hit you over the head with classic Star Trek references. Serious Trekkers will appreciate the nod to “Who Mourns for Adonais?“. In the other corner, this Bumblebee from the Transformers outfit seems like it wouldn’t be out of place in Misty’s (of Pokemon) closet either.

After seeing the sketches, we thought we knew what we were getting into, but let’s just say that we were completely blown away by the looks that made their way down the San Diego runway. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite looks below.

You know, I’ve never thought I would use the word beautiful to describe Wolverine, but I just did, and here we are.

This Mystique look channels Kevin Wada’s redesigns of the X-Men costumes in the best possible way.

Another look. Mystique as the Barbie that I’ve always wanted. Eat your heart out, Jennifer Lawrence.

There’s an Iron Throne gown. Iron Throne, gown. That’s all.

To no one’s surprise a Loki outfit did make the runway. The horns as feathers, are a cheeky little touch.

A super 70s Luna Lovegood look.

A “Little Mermaid” dress that isn’t a mermaid dress. Nice clamshell, Ariel.

This robotic Cylon-gown is also giving me a little KITT from “Knight Rider”.

Delorean-inspired separates that wouldn’t seem out of place in “Drive”. Am I right? Did I mention that this outfit takes 1.21 gigawatts to start up?

Regina! Full disclosure, I watch terrible television, and this dress would not be out of place on “Once Upon A Time” or on Lana Parrilla’s frame.

Not surprising the winners were the looks from “Back to the Future” and “Once Upon a Time”.
