After 19 days in New Zealand and Australia, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, never failed to impress when it came to her fashion choices.
True to form, modesty and color were the resonant themes in her sartorial choices. Modesty by way of appropriate neck- and hemlines and paying particular attention to nuances observers would most likely pick on: Did she wear local designers (Yes!) Did she wear the colors of the countries she was visiting? (Yes!) More importantly, did she represent the royal family with grace and class (A resounding yes!)
Throughout her tour, the Duchess wore variations of her favorite silhouettes; sheaths with sleeves or coat dresses with full skirts. She also wore color — a lot of it from deep reds like the Catherine Walker coat she was seen wearing as she descended the plane in Wellington, New Zealand with her husband Prince William and baby George in hand to soft pastels like the pale pink Alexander McQueen ensemble she wore in Adelaide, Australia. There was also that bright yellow Roksanda Ilincic dress which echoed the gold Australian national color, although the Duchess later joked that her husband thought she looked like a banana in it. But to style watchers, it was a true fashion moment.
Australian designers and labels were represented in the royal wardrobe. Among them an eyelet Zimmerman dress and an LK Bennett number with a blue floral print, possibly one of the most inexpensive items on the tour. “Frugal Kate” as the Duchess is often called when it comes to matters of style is a master of high-low dressing. Wearing an Alexander McQueen one day then a Zara jacket the next. She is also not above repeating her clothes. She wore a tweed Michael Kors coat twice while Down Under. She also repeated a Luisa Spagnoli dress she first wore in 2011.
Kate’s favorite designers also made appearances in her royal wardrobe including Jenny Packham (a LBD with a silver fern embroidery to one shoulder, which she wore to a royal function in Wellington. The silver fern is an official symbol of New Zealand). There was also a Diane Von Furstenberg blue and white printed wrap dress, which according to sales reports sold out in eight minutes after the Duchess was seen wearing it. The same buying frenzy happened when the Duchess was seen wearing a black and white graphic print dress from Tory Burch.
