New York Fashion Week was kicked out of Lincoln Center in December 2014, when the Supreme Court of the State of New York ruled it could not renew a lease for the week-long, bi-annual festivities.
Apparently, NYFW violated its use as a public park, which did not sit well with the New York City Parks Advocates. They filed a complaint claiming the location's Damrosch Park wasn't fairly and readily available to the public at all times (as some portions of the space were closed for the shows).
In another blow, Mercedes-Benz ended its sponsorship of the event, deciding instead to focus on its other global fashion initiatives.
After months of scouting alternative locations, the CFDA together with fashion week's newest sponsor, IMG, finally announced it had found not only one, but two new spaces to host the event.
"I think IMG's plan to decentralize their venue into multiple venues connects to the energy of city, and I look forward to seeing their continued support of designers showing during New York Fashion Week," Steven Kolb, president of the CFDA, told Mashable.
September's spring/summer 2016 shows will take place at Skylight at Moynihan Station (360 West 33rd Street near Penn Station) and Skylight Clarkson Square (550 Washington Street in Soho). The two will serve as interim locations until a more permanent location at the Culture Shed (West 30th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues) opens in 2017.
The locations aren't out of the blue. The Moynihan Station hosted shows like Phillip Lim, Prabal Gurung, and Diesel Black and Gold last season, while Clarkson Square has been hosting Ralph Lauren for some time now. If anything, it will make for a welcomed change for showgoers who have long lamented Lincoln Center for being too inclusive of street style peacocks, that is, "normals" who roam around in interesting outfits hoping to be seen by Tommy Ton.
In any case, multiple locations will make for an organic experience for buyers, bloggers and editors who are accustomed to shuttling uptown to downtown during the week.
Here's hoping all goes smoothly when the spring/summer shows take place, from Sept. 10-17.
