South Street Headhouse District held its first open-air fashion show Tuesday night for Philadelphia Collection at The Shambles at Headhouse Square, showcasing the best of local South Street fashion. (See photo gallery.)
Hosted by Philly native Cory Wade Hindorff, male model and "America’s Next Top Model" contestant, more than 500 people came out to The Shambles at 200 Pine St. to check out nearly 60 of South Street’s looks.
Fashion on the runway included everything from vintage original designs to thrift store fashion showcasing both women's and men's attire.
"We haven't done [a fashion show] in the last two years, and we decided that we think it's time to really showcase the boutiques and all the great stores that have recently arrived in the district," said Michael Harris, executive director of SSHD.
Through the fashion show, SSHD wanted to let the buying public know that South Street has "more than you initially think," Harris said. That is, more than just food and drink.
"We have a really booming restaurant scene and some people lose sight that we have 400 businesses here, and that not only is the fabric and textile industry [in the United States] still alive and well, but that a lot of similar businesses are here as well," Harris said. "Sometimes people are not quite aware. We try very hard to let people know that we’ve got the business community that serves every taste."
Twenty-one of the district's boutiques and salons collaborated for this event, including Bus Stop, Dude’s Boutique, Helena Boutique, Totem Brand, Follicle Studio, Modish Hair Salon and Rock Head Salon.
Francis Hilario covers hospitality, restaurants and takes on general assignments and breaking news.
