Fashion Meets Music Festival to return in 2015, organizers say - Columbus Dispatch

The Fashion Meets Music Festival will be back again next year during the Labor Day weekend, organizers have announced.

The three-day festival — which drew upward of 60,000 people to various Downtown locales for a series of concerts, fashion shows and shopping from Friday through Sunday — will take place from Sept. 4-6 next year, despite not having turned a profit in its first year.

“We knew we were going to generate a loss,” said communications director, Melissa Dickson, declining to provide exact figures.

“Coachella, at year one, had more than a $1 million loss,” she noted, referring to the 15-year-old music and arts festival held annually in the desert of southern California.

Still, Dickson said organizers were pleased with attendance, especially for a first-year event and given some rainy weather on Sunday.

She called the event a success.

Horacio Nieto, a Columbus fashion designer who presented his men’s, women’s and bridal lines at the festival, said the event gave both local musicians and designers an opportunity to showcase their talents on a large stage and amid nationally recognized artists.

Bands such as O.A.R. and New Found Glory headlined the music portion of the event.

Nieto did say, though, that festival happenings felt a bit scattered, what with the musical stages at McPherson Commons and Lifestyles Community Pavilion, fashion shows at Studio Movie Grill and boutique booths at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

“If I gave them advice,” he said, “I’d put it all in the convention center and use the convention center the whole weekend.”

Dickson said organizers before next year would be addressing a number of concerns, including confusing ticketing policies, a disconnect with the marketplace and the geographic separation between the music and the fashion.

“We want to work on incorporating more of the music and fashion,” she said, adding that she hopes that both will take place on the Columbus Commons in 2015. “Columbus wants that fusion.”
