Ms. Vanhee-Cybulski will begin by designing the fall-winter collection after the departure of the current designer, Christophe Lemaire, in October. Earlier this week, Hermès announced the resignation of Mr. Lemaire to focus on his own label. Ms. Vanhee-Cybulski's first collection will be shown in March.
Ms. Vanhee-Cybulski is Hermès' first designer in nearly 20 years that isn't designing for another house on the side. Before Mr. Lemaire, Hermès' women's clothing was created by Jean-Paul Gaultier and Martin Margiela, who split their time between the different labels.
There has been concern in recent years that designers are stretched thin by multiple commitments. As a consequence, major luxury labels have moved towards choosing creative heads with no other jobs on the side. Louis Vuitton last year hired Nicolas Ghesquière to replace Marc Jacobs, who shuttled between New York and Paris to juggle his two designer roles.
Hermès Chief Executive Axel Dumas highlighted the choice of Ms. Vanhee-Cybulski for her availability. "She will devote herself full-time to our house," he said in a statement.
Ms. Vanhee-Cybulski has worked in the shadows of some of the trendiest designer labels. Until this spring, she worked for The Row, the American brand founded by Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen. Before that she was at Celine with Phoebe Philo, considered one of the most influential designers. The French native also worked at Maison Martin Margiela.
