On the runway: Fashion forward at SIUH annual show in New Dorp - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Fashion and fundraising matched perfectly at the annual fashion show of Staten Island University Hospital's Service Auxiliary on Sunday afternoon at the Excelsior Grand in New Dorp, where close to 150 people enjoyed lunch at convivial tables before the models took to the runway.

"This is a great opportunity to raise funds for the hospital -- a godsend," said West Brighton resident Brenda Bell, a registered nurse who is senior director of the Department of Patient Care Services, a SIUH employee for 44 years, and co-chair of the fundraiser.

"Staten Island has the highest breast cancer mortality rate in the five boroughs," noted Maria Kavan, director of development for SIUH. "We have a lot of survivors in the room today."

The fashion show models included Miss Staten Island, 18-year-old Katlyn Cohen, a freshman at the College of Staten Island, and her sister, Kyleigh, 6, a first-grader at PS 32.

Before the show started, Ms. Cohen demonstrated to red-haired Kyleigh how to orchestrate a runaway walk to show off the younster's pretty, pastel-striped sleeveless dress.

"Walk, walk pose," coached Ms. Cohen, putting her hand on her hip. "Then step, step, turn," as her younger sister practiced.

"I tried on two dresses and picked this one because it was longer and I can twirl in it," Kyleigh said.

The fashions on display were provided courtesy of Angel's Bridal in Huguenot; The Children's Place, with locations in New Dorp and New Springville; Caché in New Springville and Maxi Boutique in Dongan Hills.

Proceeds from the fundraiser are earmarked for the Florina Rusi-Marke Comprehensive Breast Center at SIUH.

The Center is the first to serve Staten Island in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and research, providing the most current treatments for patients with benign breast disease and breast cancer.

This year is the 152nd anniversary of the SIUH Service Auxiliary, noted Eltingville resident Barbara Strype, who has served as its president since 2013 and is a registered nurse at the hospital. "We are the oldest continually serving hospital auxiliary in the U.S.," she said proudly.
